What exactly is anxiety?? Anxiety is basically a psychological/ mental state characterized by a feeling of uneasiness. And it caused by many factors. Do you think that you are the only one feeling anxiety?? Well no, almost everyone feels at some point or the other. And, how many people are successful at overcoming anxiety? The secret is to practice something that would help overcoming anxiety. Anxiety can arise for various reasons but the most recurring one is performance related anxiety. Athletes also suffer from an anxiety related to their performance. It is called anxiety of performance, it generally stems from a deep desire to perform well but insecurities about failure to do the same. Anxiety can also occur when an athlete is under pressure (self induced or induced by some other person like coach family etc) to perform well. This leads to a performance anxiety and hence may create further trouble instead of overcoming anxiety. Such anxieties cause more harm than good and therefore should be avoided. Overcoming anxiety is easy if you follow the following methods.
There are ways of overcoming anxiety that are used by athletes around the world. The traditional beginning is by asking the athlete to take deep breaths. This also helps a lot by increasing the oxygen flow in the blood. Another way of overcoming anxiety is to stop thinking about anxiety itself. It is true that if an athlete were to worry about anxiety ruining his/her performance then that may in turn lead to increased anxiety. So basically anxiety is caused by too much worrying over something and can mar the athlete’s performance. An athlete can also use it to his advantage. What he may think to be anxiety may be their adrenalin, so that is a good thing. Overcoming anxiety is easy if they think about it, as I said earlier anxiety is a feeling of how you think. If they think or worry too much then they end up having anxiety, whereas if they take it to be something else and don’t worry about it then they will not suffer from anxiety in the first place.
Mainly the relaxation techniques are best used for overcoming anxiety and are used by coaches around the world successfully in overcoming anxiety in athletes. They have a tremendous affect in overcoming anxiety. Deep breathing which I stated above is also one of the methods of overcoming anxiety by relaxation and is most widely used as the first step of overcoming anxiety by relaxation.
So as I stated above such anxiety (anxiety of performance) usually mars the performance of the athlete and therefore it becomes quintessential for him/her to over come it, which is generally done by the methods posted above. These techniques of overcoming anxiety are universal and are used by coaches/trainers around the world to ease and overcome anxiety in athletes in organized competitions. They are as simple as they sound and can be adopted by anyone individual or professional athlete to overcoming anxiety that is performance related.
